The cheapest ways to eat at Bill Miller

Bill Miller's extras list is where the value hides: a 30-cent tortilla, a $1.10 bean taco, a $1.20 bacon taco. Nobody assembles these into actual meals and costs them, so we did. Four orders under five dollars, each with its calorie count and its cost per 100 kcal, plus the group-order maths for when you are feeding more than one.

Where the value actually sits on this menu

Three structural things make Bill Miller unusually cheap if you order deliberately, and none of them involve a coupon.

1. The extras list is priced like a corner shop

A tortilla is 30 cents, a jalapeño 35 cents, an extra roll 45 cents. A dozen tortillas is $4.20, which is 35 cents each — so buying singles is actually cheaper per tortilla than the dozen. That is unusual, and it is the sort of thing that only shows up when someone puts the whole list in one table.

2. Bundling is not always cheaper

The $24 Taco Box saves $2.85 against its own standard mix, but it is $10.80 more than twelve Bean Tacos. The $8.00 Wrangler Plate looks like the value plate but the $9.45 Regular adds a third side that costs $2.25 à la carte. The rule: check the bundle against the thing you would actually have ordered, not against the most expensive version of it.

3. Drinks are where the money leaks

A large tea is $2.20 and a gallon bucket is $4.75. Break-even is 2.2 cups, so any table of three should be buying buckets. Twelve cups is $26.40; two buckets is $9.50 and pours more.

The one thing that is not cheap

Buying pit meat by the pound. Brisket, spareribs and turkey are all $20.35 a pound, which is a fair market price but not a bargain. If you want brisket cheaply, order it as a $2.85 taco rather than by weight.
